Freak Crash for Junk

  Freak Crash for Junk
Date: Tuesday 13th November 2001 Place: M25 Essex

Following a gig at Freak@Vivid & Elite in Romford, hardcore/metal band Junk DNA, were travelling home along the M25 when their van’s steering column suddenly snapped, sending the vehicle careering out of control and crashing into the central reservation. Fortunately, thanks to the skills of the driver, Toby Phillips, who is also the bands bassist, they managed to slow the vehicle down to 55/60mph by dropping down the gears before hitting the crash barrier. They were convinced this saved their lives.

The van was stacked with their equipment - 2 Marshall 4x12" cabs; 2 Warwick 4x10" cabs; drum hardware; 10, 6 & 4 unit rack cases and of course, guitars. The force of the impact sent all this equipment flying around the van and most of it landed on the guitars.

The motorway was closed while the emergency services attended and cleared up the mess and took the band to the nearest service station.

Guitarist Ben Whatsley, who also works at Percy Priors Music in Salisbury told me, "As you could imagine, at the time we didn’t care too much for our equipment but for everyone’s well being. Luckily no-one was seriously hurt in the accident and we just grabbed as much as we could. Once we had regrouped and were sat in the warm, Toby and I decided to check through our gear. I was sure my guitar would be in a mess as the case was slightly buckled and had taken all the other equipment hitting it before it too, was thrown out onto the road".

Fortunately the guitars had been kept in HISCOX cases so, the moment of reckoning………

"I opened my case for the first time since the accident," said Ben, "and there, all OK and in one piece was my beauty, even to my surprise, still in tune!! Toby’s guitar was still in perfect shape as well!!

We both have ABSOLUTELY no doubt that had our guitars been in any other cases, then we would be looking at broken instruments. Instead, thanks to Hiscox and their amazing cases our pride and joys are still with us today."

A spokesman for the company said, "Because of the high quality of our products, many people perceive our cases to be expensive, but in fact, they are very competitively priced and offer a level of protection no other case in their class can match, as this incident shows, and with a 3 Year Guarantee they represent unbeatable value for money."

Ben finished by saying, "My guitars are Ibanez Universes and to show how much I rate your cases after this incident, when a customer asks about the reliability of Hiscox cases, I place MY guitar in its own case and stand on it…this alone has sold many of your cases in our shop."

"I would like to thank you for making such great cases. Another satisfied, happy customer. Keep up the great work!"

Thanks Ben, we will.
